0:02 We have to develop a sense of what the Quran wants from us. The principles
0:04 Allah wants us to live by. And when I I
0:07 personally believe from what I've been
0:09 able able to understand of Allah's book,
0:11 when we implement this kind of principle
0:13 living in our families, then the ummah
0:16 at large transforms.
0:19 We transform economically, socially,
0:21 politically,
0:23 you know, strategically. We transform
0:25 because we built the right kind of
0:27 wilaya from the ground up. When the
0:29 brick is weak, how's the building going
0:31 to be strong?
0:33 How is that even possible?
0:50 Waj'al al-nuri min al-zulum. Wa mukhrij al-sabri min al-alam fa mulqi
1:01 al-tawbati ala al-nadam.
1:09 Wa nusalli ala rasulihi al-akram dhi al-sharafi al-ashammi wa al-nuri

1:56 Wa alhamdulillah alladhi nahmaduhu wa
1:58 nasta'inuhu wa nastaghfiruhu.
2:01 Wa nu'minu bihi wa natawakkalu alayhi wa
2:03 na'udhu billahi min shururi anfusina wa
2:05 min sayyi'ati a'malina.
2:08 Man yahdihi Allahu fala mudilla lah wa
2:10 man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
2:13 Wa nashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu

2:29 Fa sallallahu alayhi wa sallam tasliman
2:31 kathiran kathira. Amma ba'd.
2:34 Fa inna asdaqa al-hadithi kitabu Allah
2:36 wa khayru al-hadi hadi Muhammadin

2:41 Wa inna sharra al-umuri muhdathatuha wa

2:47 Wa kulla dalalatin fi al-nar.

3:10 yaftarina bayna aydihinna wa
3:12 arjulihinna.
3:14 Wa la ya'sina ka fi ma'ruf.
3:16 Fa bayi'hunna wa astaghfir lahunna
3:18 Allah. Inna Allahu ghafurun rahim.
3:21 Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu la tatawallaw

3:31 Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri
3:33 wa ahlul uqdatan min lisani yafqahu
3:35 qawli.
3:36 Wa Allahumma thabbitna inda al-mawti bi
3:38 la ilaha illa Allah. Wa Allahumma
3:40 aj'alna min alladhina amanu wa amilu
3:42 al-salihat wa tawassaw bi al-haqq. Wa
3:44 tawassaw bi al-sabr. Amin ya rabbal
3:46 alamin.
3:48 Today's brief khutbah is about a single
3:52 ayah mostly
3:54 that belongs to surat al-mumtahinah,
3:56 also called al-mumtahanah.
3:58 This surah is unique. It's a small
4:01 surah.
4:02 And the situation in which the surah was
4:04 given to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
4:06 wa sallam is also very different.
4:09 The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, many of you
4:11 may be familiar with it, was already
4:13 signed.
4:14 So the treaty has been signed. So
4:15 Muslims are no longer in a state of war.
4:19 There's already been a declaration, a
4:20 peace agreement. And even though Muslims
4:23 have engaged in conflict three times
4:25 already directly and many smaller times
4:27 before this,
4:29 the most important one being the Battle
4:30 of al-Ahzab, the most recent one, now
4:33 there's a ceasefire.
4:34 And there's no more conflict.
4:37 That does not mean that the Quraysh or
4:39 the people in Mecca and the Muslims are
4:41 at peace. It's still war, but it's a
4:44 cold war. It's an intelligence war. It's
4:48 a an economic war, but it's no longer a
4:50 military war. The military aspect of it
4:53 has been closed.
4:55 And in this kind of a situation, both
4:58 sides, they try to undermine or destroy
5:01 the other side
5:03 by non-military means.
5:05 Espionage, intelligence, spying, this
5:08 sort of thing.
5:10 And so what the Quran does, what Allah
5:11 tells us in this time, is a very
5:14 important There's a very important set
5:15 of lessons that came right after Ahzab
5:17 leading up to Hudaybiyyah and even after
5:19 Hudaybiyyah, how are Muslims going to
5:22 build develop relationships that they
5:23 can trust?
5:25 Because somebody might shake your hand
5:26 and trust you and you trust them and you
5:29 share things with them and they might be
5:30 delivering your information to the
5:32 enemy.
5:33 And they might be giving them a
5:34 strategic advantage. So this is a time
5:36 where trust exercises needs to need to
5:39 be developed and we need to know who is
5:41 our enemy and who's not our enemy.
5:43 And so even though this happens, like I
5:46 said, in surat al-Ahzab among other
5:47 places, the one of the most important
5:49 places where we learn who is our ally
5:52 and who is our enemy is surat
5:54 al-mumtahinah.
5:55 Who is the enemy and who's the Who do
5:57 you trust? Who do you not trust? Who are
5:59 you alliance ally allied with? Who are
6:01 you not allied with? You see, before
6:04 Islam, the Arabs had a very
6:07 large concept of alliance. Who is your
6:10 ally? Who do you trust? This concept of
6:12 wilaya was a powerful concept in Arab
6:14 culture for thousands of years.
6:17 So of course, if you are from the same
6:19 tribe, automatically you are allies to
6:21 each other. That is the strongest kind
6:22 of citizenship. That was one kind of
6:24 alliance.
6:25 But then sometimes there were smaller
6:27 tribes and sometimes there were
6:28 middle-sized tribes and sometimes there
6:30 were big tribes.
6:31 And the small tribe can be easily
6:33 attacked by the big one.
6:35 And the middle one can also be attacked
6:37 by the big one. So the this the medium
6:39 one, the medium-size and the small-size
6:41 would make alliances so together they
6:44 can protect themselves against the big
6:46 one, right? This was a kind of alliance.
6:48 And then what did that alliance mean?
6:49 You can use our well, you can we can
6:52 drink the milk from your goats, we can
6:54 marry among each other, we can borrow
6:56 from each other, we can use each other's
6:57 land, you know, your animals can graze
6:59 from our farm, that kind of thing. So
7:01 this was alliance. And if we're
7:03 attacked, we'll both defend together.
7:05 If there's a problem, if there's a fine
7:07 to pay, both of us will pay the fine
7:09 together. This was wilaya. This was the
7:11 alliance.
7:12 But after this Treaty of Hudaybiyyah,
7:16 the Quraysh were trying to see if they
7:19 can still hold on to influence because
7:21 every other tribe respected Quraysh.
7:24 But now so many tribes were also coming
7:27 and making treaties with the Muslims.
7:29 You know, they were coming and they were
7:31 giving bay'ah and they were accepting
7:32 Islam and Islam is spreading quickly all
7:34 over the region. But these are not You
7:36 can you can't necessarily call them
7:38 trusted partners.
7:40 They have not been tested. They were not
7:42 in war with you. They were not together
7:44 with you. They were just They are
7:45 newcomers. And they come and they shake
7:47 your hand. You don't have any background
7:49 information. You don't know if you can
7:50 trust them.
7:52 So Allah in this surah, from the very
7:54 opening, ya ayyuha alladhina amanu la
7:56 tattakhidhu aduwwi wa aduwwakum awliya.
7:59 Believers, do not take my enemy and your
8:01 enemy as partners and allies.
